Dear Sonoran University Family,

It is with a heavy heart that I share the passing of a beloved member of our community, Dr. Soram Singh Khalsa, on September 28th, 2024. His presence was a powerful and guiding force, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Known affectionately as Dr. Soram by his patients, he dedicated nearly 50 years of his life to the practice of medicine, becoming a pioneer in the field of integrative medicine as early as 1977. He masterfully blended his training in internal medicine with acupuncture, homeopathy, nutrition, botanical medicine, and later environmental medicine. He was not only a visionary healer but a strong advocate for naturopathic medicine. He played a vital role in shaping the profession in California, serving on the state’s first Naturopathic Medicine Health Bureau and chairing the committee that defined its scope of practice.

Dr. Soram’s journey as a healer began at a young age — he knew early on that he was meant to be a physician. After completing his undergraduate studies at Yale, he attended medical school at Case Western Reserve, then made his way to California for his Internal Medicine Residency in the mid-70s. He stayed, putting down roots and practicing medicine in Beverly Hills for the next five decades. The Khalsa Medical Clinic, a haven for healing, became renowned not only for its excellent care but also for the warmth and love that Dr. Soram infused into every interaction. Having had the privilege of visiting the clinic several times, I saw firsthand that Dr. Soram’s success stemmed from much more than his medical expertise—it was his genuine kindness, his meticulous attention to every detail, and above all, the love and compassion he extended to each of his patients.

Last year, Dr. Soram and his wife of 53 years, Caroline, made a lasting mark on our own university, gifting a portion of their estate to establish a future endowed Chair in Environmental Medicine. We were fortunate to honor the Khalsa’s generosity during their lifetime by naming the library at Lim Commons the Dr. Soram and Caroline Khalsa Health Sciences Library.

During his keynote speech at the June 2024 Commencement, Dr. Soram shared a powerful lesson from his early days as a doctor – it was one that he said held the key to true healing: “Three things to remember when seeing your patients—kindness, compassion, and caring. If you show these three things to them, they will enrich your life, and you will love your patients. Be positive, and let your presence begin their healing process.”

In recent years, Dr. Soram faced the challenges of Parkinson’s disease, yet even as his mobility became limited, his dedication to his patients never wavered. He continued to practice medicine up until just days before his passing. Dr. Soram embodied the very heart of medicine — healing not just with his knowledge, but with his boundless love.

As we remember him, let us honor his legacy by embracing the values he held dear. May his soul soar to even greater heights, and may we carry forward the spirit of compassion, kindness, and care that he exemplified.

Yours in Health,
