He received his PhD (summa cum laude) in chemistry at the Leibniz Institute of Plant Biochemistry (IPB) and Martin-Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (Germany). He worked on the isolation and structure elucidation, chemical synthesis, and metabolomic analyses of bioactive compounds from medicinal plants. He was a Feodor Lynen fellow (AvH) at Harvard Medical School in Boston, where he conducted his postdoctoral research working on small molecules from microbiomes. He also held teaching or/and research positions at TU Braunschweig (Institute of Pharmacy, Germany) and Baylor College of Medicine/Texas Children’s Hospital. His research interest has been the discovery and applications of medicinally relevant compounds from plants and microbiome interactions.
