Prerequisites, Requirements & Application Process

College of Nutrition - Program Admissions

The Sonoran Admissions Committee carefully evaluates each application for the Master of Science in Clinical NutritionExecutive Master of Science in Nutrition Business Leadership, and the Supervised Practice Experience to select individuals who can be successful in the program and contribute to the learning experience. Candidates are considered holistically with consideration given to factors beyond scores, GPAs and other numerical performance indicators. Those factors might include but are not limited to extracurricular activities, unique work or service experience, meaningful contributions to the community, demonstrated compassion, meaningful volunteer work,  leadership potential or impact, a history of overcoming hardship or disadvantage, maturity, exceptional talents or skills, trends or improvements in academic performance, success in a challenging undergraduate environment, and graduate school or workplace performance.

Applications are evaluated on a rolling admissions basis, ensuring that each candidate receives a prompt response to their application. Once all documents are received, the application is considered and a decision is made.

Masters Degrees - Admissions Requirements

Applicants are required to meet and adhere to the Institutional Admission Policies and Requirements (see the Institutional Admissions Policies) as well as the Admission Policies and Requirements for their specific program. This section contains admission policies and requirements specific to the MS programs.

M.S. in Clinical Nutrition

Prospective students who wish to enter a master’s program must complete and submit the following requirements prior to matriculation.

  • A completed online application and application fee payment
  • A current resume
  • A personal statement
  • Official transcript from the institution that conferred the student’s highest awarded degree. Coursework/degree must be completed at a regionally accredited or candidate college or university. To search for your institution in the U.S. Department of Education’s database of accredited postsecondary institutions visit http://ope.ed.gov/accreditation/. Official transcripts should be sent electronically from the institution/college directly to Sonoran at transcripts@sonoran.edu
  • A cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale is preferred. However, Sonoran uses a holistic admissions process for the MSCN and MSNBL programs, and all applicants with a GPA below 2.75 are encouraged to apply to be considered on a case-by-case basis.
  • Optional letters of recommendation may be submitted to strengthen an application
  • International Applicants must submit foreign transcripts from the institution that conferred the student’s highest degree earned.  This transcript must be evaluated (course by course evaluation) by a member organization of either the National Council on the Evaluation of Foreign Education Credentials (NACES)or the Association of International Credential Evaluators (AICE). Fees for this service are the responsibility of the applicant.
  • Military transcript for former members of the armed services.
Executive M.S. in Nutrition Business Leadership

Prospective students who wish to enter the executive MSNBL program must complete and submit the following requirements prior to matriculation.

  • A completed online application and application fee payment
  • A current resume
  • A personal statement
  • Official transcript from the institution that conferred the student’s highest awarded degree. Coursework/degree must be completed at a regionally accredited college or university.   • Two (2) professional references
  • Early career candidates (less than 7 years of professional work experience) must submit one professional letter of recommendation addressing the leadership potential of the candidate.
  • Complete an interview with the Admissions Committee
  • International Applicants must submit foreign transcripts form the institution that conferred the student’s highest degree earned. This transcript must be evaluated (course by course evaluation) by a member organization of either of the National Council on the Evaluation of Foreign Credentials (NACES) or the Association of International Credential Evaluations (AICE). Fees for this service are the responsibility of the applicant.

Supervised Practice Experience

Application Process

Sonoran University accepts applications on a rolling basis for fall, winter, spring, and summer, start dates. Applications may be submitted online to admissions.

Program Eligibility

Candidate must meet the following degree requirements by the start date of the SPE program:

  • Master of Science or Doctoral degree in a field of nutrition or a related field (including, but not limited to Public Health, Health Science, Biochemistry, Nursing, Physician’s Assistant, Dietetics) from a United States accredited college or university, or its foreign equivalent
  • Doctoral degree in a field of clinical healthcare (including, but not limited to, DC, DDS, OD, DCN, Doctor of Nursing, ND, PharmD) from a United States accredited college or university, or its foreign equivalent
  • MD or DO degree from a regionally accredited medical or osteopathy school or foreign equivalent.

*Candidates admitted to the SPE program will be required to undergo a criminal background check and must permit the results to be provided by the reporting agency to Sonoran.

Transfer Applicants and Transfer Credit

Sonoran University welcomes applications from transfer students. Transfer credit limits are set in adherence with standards set by Accreditation Council of Nutrition Professional Education (ACNPE). Only courses completed with a B or better will be considered for transfer credit in the College of Nutrition. No more than 25% of total MS program credits may be transfer credits. For students concurrently enrolled in the MS and ND courses, no more than 12 transfer credits will be accepted for the MS program.
