Applied Kinesiology (AK) is a holistic diagnostic tool that allows the practitioner to have a dialogue with the patient’s body through the use of manual muscle testing. In AK, every muscle correlates with a specific organ, gland or meridian system. Through the proper use of manual muscle tests, along with standard diagnosis of the patient’s chemical, emotional and structural health, an assessment can be made regarding a patient’s overall health. This club aims to provide Sonoran students the opportunity to gain the skills and practice to be great AK practitioners. We help accomplish this by hosting the AK 100 certification course at Sonoran, bringing in active AK practitioners from the community and providing weekly directed AK.

The Sonoran Botanical Medicine Club explores how herbs can be a powerful modality of Naturopathic Medicine. We inspire students to get to know the medicinal plants in depth.

The Energia Club, formerly known as the Gemstone Club, was created to provide a collaboration of resources about Energy Medicine for the student body at Sonoran.  The mission of this club is to present the many possibilities of Energy Medicine that include its vast modalities including Gemstones, Bach Flower, Reiki, Therapeutic Touch, Acupuncture, Qi Gong, Tai Chi, Quantum Touch, BioSensing, EFT, yoga, and much more for personal and professional growth.
Einstein and Quantum physics define “energy” as “at the atomic level everything exists in the Universe is energy, vibrating, and oscillating at different rates; that physical matter and energy are just two forms of the same thing”.  In their shared view, the body is a dynamic energy system as the mind and spirit are true sources of consciousness, or actual operator of the brain.  The emotions and spirit of an individual can influence illness through energetic and neurohormonal connections among the mind, body, and spirit.   Vibrational Energy Medicine is a combination of new and old ideals and practices of ancient healing with the latest discoveries in science to provide a new approach to diagnosis and treating illness.  Vibrational Energy Medicine uses the ideals of how the nature of atoms and views the body as a complex, integrated life-energy system that provides a vehicle for human consciousness.
As we learn more about the principles of Naturopathic Medicine, Energy Medicine allows us to understand the subtle world of how the integration of the mind, body, and spirit allows for balance of optimal health.  The Energy System has many layers that make up the whole including the bioelectricmagnetic field (aura), meridians, chakras, and energetic grid lines.  Similar to many other cultures, there are many names for the flowing energy that provides life known as Vis in Naturopathic Medicine, Chi in Chinese Medicine, and Prana in Aryuvedic Medicine.

What are Entheogens?

The term entheogen literally means “to cultivate the divine within,” and is used to describe sacred medicines, whether of indigenous tradition or synthetic chemical, that catalyze spiritual and physical healing by facilitating altered states of consciousness. Examples include ayahuasca, cannabis, peyote, ibogaine, psilocybin-containing mushrooms, and MDMA. Some entheogens are believed to have been used for healing purposes for thousands of years, while others were synthesized in the last century. They share a powerful potential for healing when used responsibly in a therapeutic context.

A Psychedelic Renaissance

According to a 2014 Scientific American article, “psychedelic drugs are poised to be the next major breakthrough in mental healthcare.” In the United States, numerous Phase II trials have been completed for psilocybin and MDMA. Johns Hopkins has conducted research on psilocybin for tobacco cessation, in healthy experienced meditators, and in patients with depression and/or anxiety associated with a life-threatening cancer diagnosis. In their cancer research, an astounding 92% of participants demonstrated significant and sustained decreases in depressive symptoms after just two treatments, and about 50% of participants described it as the single most meaningful experience of their life. In another study funded by the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS), 83% of participants with chronic, treatment-resistant post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) were no longer diagnosable with PTSD after just two MDMA-assisted psychotherapy sessions, and those results were sustained 4 years later. With Phase III trials now underway, both MDMA and psilocybin are anticipated to become medicinally legal by approximately 2021. We are truly in the midst of a psychedelic renaissance, and these medicines hold the potential to offer lasting healing to many people.

Entheogens and Naturopathic Medicine

The team of medical students behind ERA recognize that demand for entheogenic medicine is already substantial and this field will only continue expanding. There will soon be a huge need for healthcare practitioners in this field. With the proper training, naturopathic physicians would be highly qualified to assist patients in entheogenic experiences. Naturopathic doctors are already trained to treat their patients as a whole person and they understand well the profound impact of mental and emotional wellness on physical health. Many people require deep mental-emotional healing in order for their physical symptoms to resolve. Entheogens facilitate a profound level of healing from which true, lasting healing may naturally arise.

What We Do

ERA envisions a new paradigm of healthcare which honors indigenous knowledge of psychoactive substances and their derivatives while upholding the highest standards of evidence-based medicine.

ERA’s mission is to maintain a conversation about therapeutic applications of entheogenic medicine and provide information about current medical research as well as traditional uses of these medicines in ritual and healing. Our lectures and educational resources are frequently free and available to the public because we believe that this information should be accessible to everyone.

Naturopathic Midwifery Affiliation

(NOTE:  A second or third year needs to take up leadership to continue the group otherwise it will dissolve due to inactivity.  Contact current student government leadership to learn how to resume this group.)
We are a group of students who desire to care for and tend to the births of expecting mothers. In addition to completing our ND degree, extra requirements are needed to become a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) in order to legally and safely assist our patients as a midwife. Our purpose at Sonoran is to facilitate opportunities within our community to fulfill the requirements for CPM set forth by the North American Registry for Midwives (NARM). (Please note that licensing differs from state to state. Please refer to your state laws for complete information.) This club is suggested to ND students.
Each quarter our group offers educational opportunities to raise awareness about the latest trends within the birth community. These short lectures cover topics such as proper nutrition, homebirths/birth centers verses hospital births, breastfeeding, VBACs (vaginal birth after cesarean) etc. We also aim to provide quality and up-to-date resources for students to use in their future practice. In addition to our on-campus events, we also have yearly trips that travel to developing nations to volunteer in free birth clinics.

The Naturopathic Society is devoted to preserving and maintaining the philosophy of Naturopathic Medicine as it relates to nature cure and adherence to natural laws. We firmly believe that nature offers the answers and solutions necessary to achieve and maintain optimal health. We acknowledge the complexity of disease states yet address them with simplicity and common sense, utilizing elements such as the therapeutic order. We’re passionate about our education and often host guest speakers and workshops to further out training in specific Naturopathic modalities. We embrace the medical and technological advances of our time and strive to create balance between the modern world and our founding Naturopathic principles.

Our Purpose

The Naturopathic Society commits to preserve, promote and enhance the understanding of naturopathic philosophy and its history. Our purpose is to develop a curriculum for the further training of our student body in other modalities as part of the therapeutic order.

Membership Benefits

If you’re looking for an edge in the marketplace after you graduate and are serious about your education, join our group! As a member, you will have the opportunity to pursue extra training in various therapies and protocols. You’ll receive discounted prices on seminars and workshops as an incentive to pursue extra education and hands-on learning opportunities. Our members often receive precedence for workshops, seminars and specialty training.

Do you want to run a successful practice after you graduate? A naturopathic medical degree is only part of the equation. You also need to learn about the business side of things – and that’s where the Naturopreneur’s Society can help.

We are a student organization that aspires to develop successful entrepreneurial leaders among current naturopathic students. We achieve this by bringing in successful naturopathic physicians and members of the Small Business Association and Small Business Development Center to provide various talks on business-related topics. We also hold various workshops for students and arrange site visits to successful naturopathic clinics to get insight on what it takes to run a thriving practice.

Our students started Naturopaths Without Borders (NWB) in 2004 by launching a worldwide effort to provide naturopathic health care to impoverished communities. NWB’s goal is to make naturopathic medical care more accessible to all cultural and socioeconomic groups and to educate underserved communities about the principles and modalities of naturopathic medicine. At the same time, NWB would like to prepare students and physicians to provide medical services to these communities through foreign language and cultural training.

In 2010, NWB first partnered with New Birth Mexican Mission, a church serving the community of Puerto Peñasco, after working in this area since 2006. Since then, NWB has worked with various organizations in Puerto Peñasco providing naturopathic health care. Some of the most prevalent diseases patients are seen for are uncontrolled type 2 diabetes and hypertension. Patients also present with musculoskeletal pain and injuries, tooth pain, chronic depression, diabetic neuropathy, facial paralysis, men’s and women’s health issues, pregnancy and common infectious illness. As a student volunteer, you’ll have the opportunity to see patients for follow-up visits under the supervision of a ND, witness amazing patient transformations and experience the power of naturopathic medicine.

About Perspective

Perspective is an RSO club that focuses on mental health and balance. Being in such a rigorous program, doubt and fear cyclically surfaces, and when this is coupled with the stressors of every day life, students often feel burnt out by the end of each quarter. To prevent this, we want to offer students a safe space each week to feel these emotions, process them and hopefully shift their perspective of a particular experience to one that brings more peace of mind. Connecting with other students who also may be struggling and feeling overwhelmed allows us to not feel so alone in this experience; to know that it is okay, to not feel okay, 100% of the time. Sonoran is filled with loving hearts and an abundance of empathy, and we want to give the same attention and care back to the students who so graciously give to others. We share insights of what has worked for us to integrate and align while moving forward in this program and ensure that mental health is our number one priority. This is a judgment free, accepting and welcoming group, and we would love to hear how we can best serve you in this phase of your journey.

SVA’s mission is to create a sense of community and support among student veterans and community veterans. SVA’s mission serves to support veterans’ ease of transition from military to college life and beyond.

We are here to support student veterans transitioning to the role of becoming medical students as well as being a point of outreach to the veteran community. We host events throughout the year to help teach future clinicians about veteran health needs and to recognize the sacrifices that our troops have made for us during their time serving. Some of these events include a Memorial day and Veterans day celebration, collecting donations for homeless veterans, and sending cards and care packages to our troops.
